Media Production and Filmmaking Course

This three-week Summer Media Production course introduces upper school students to creating shortform, nonfiction media inspired by their surroundings. Drawing from documentary and social media formats, students learn how to capture real moments and create interesting short films. Examples of projects might be a day-in-the-life video, an interview with a classmate or staff member about their life, or a mini documentary about a musician a student enjoys.
The course is open to Viewpoint and non-Viewpoint students, with a minimum enrollment of eight students. Students will need a laptop with Adobe Creative Suite- Viewpoint students have access to these accounts with their school logins.

Skills & Focus Areas
Students will learn:
- Camera fundamentals (composition, movement, shooting with phones or cameras)
- Microphone use and basic sound recording
- Editing shortform video for clarity, pacing, and tone
- Nonfiction storytelling and safe filming practices
- Norms of shortform content
Projects
Students will complete a series of short assignments and finish with a small portfolio of two to three shortform works (30 seconds to three minutes each), such as:
- Observational mini-docs
- Video essays
- Place-based or routine-based shorts
- Social media–style nonfiction content
